Tracing the roots of the Beauvais, Charrier, Guerin, Guillory, Nugent, Ortego, and Prestenback Families
I have been able to trace my line only as far back as Matthew Nugent, born, approximately 1724, in Brunswick, North Carolina in the United States. Matthew was married to Isabel Elizabeth MacBray in 1799 in St. Landry Parish, Louisian; Isabel was born in 1730 and was also of Brunswick, North Carolina. The couple died, Isabel in 1794 and Matthew in 1795, in Rapides Parish in Louisiana. More on Matthew Nugent (including a land sale to my ancestor, Jean Baptiste Beauvais). Nugent Castle
I am unsure who our ancestor is; and so have listed the lines of Matthew & Isabel's children here.
Perhaps it is Edmond, who married and unknown woman.
Our ancestor might be Matthew; born 1754 in Brunswick, North Carolina and dying 1814 in Rapides Parish in Louisiana. His wife is known only as "Zylpha"; they married in 1800. Zylpha was born in 1783 in Tennesse and died in January of 1866 in Louisiana.
Matthew Michael, known as Michael was born in Rapides Parish on 15 Dec 1806. In 1844 in Catahoula Parish, Louisiana he married Mary Jane Droddy, who was born in Illinois on 13 Dec 1826. Their son, my ancestor, was Michael Levi . The 1860 Census shows this couple with 6 children at home; value of the farm was $32,650 from Avoyelles Parish, Roll 407, Book 1, Page 319, dated July 5, 1860 by Edgar Edmond Cockrane, Assistant Marshall. It is unknown when Mary Jane died; Michael died 5 Jul 1865 in Avoyelles Parish and is buried at the Old Evergreen Burying Ground in Evergreen, Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana; located in the Southwest Quarter - Row 2 (buried with members of Fogleman Family), according to "The Old Evergreen Burying Ground" By Porter and Barbara Wright, Hébert Publications, Rayne, LA 1990 Page: p. 29.
Michael Levi W. Nugent was born in Bayou Jack, Louisiana in Avoyelles Parish in 1852. He was married to Rosalie Guillory on 27 Jan 1874 by Rev. P.E. Simon and with witnesses E.U. Joffrion, J.A. Nugent, and C.C. Matthews, according to Brides Book of Avoyelles Parish, LA - 1856-1880 - Vol 2 - Jeraldine DuFour LaCour, P. 72. Rosalie was born in Bayou Jack on 28 Jan 1855, daughter of Valery Guillory and Marie Josepha Dupuis. Michael Levi died two years after his marriage and one year after his son was born, in May of 1876; he was only twenty-four years of age. Rosalie raised their son, Levy Nugent; and I believe she re-married to Dorsin Marius Guillot, with whom she had six children (Angel, Hypolite, Meo, Simeon, Valcin, and Lamie). Rosalie died 18 Sep 1933 at the age of 78.
Levy Nugent was born 22 Feb 1875 in Bayou Jack, Louisiana in Avoyelles Parish. On 8 Jan 1895, he married Florida Marie Charrier at Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church in Plaucheville, Louisiana (Avoyelles Parish). Levy was drafted for WWI on 12 Sep 1918 at the age of 43. Florida was born 20 Feb 1877. Levy died 1 Apr 1931 and Florida died 23 Sep 1945; both are buried at Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church Cemetery in Plaucheville, Louisiana along with four of their eleven children.
I found this information about Levy & Florida's wedding:
The 1910 Cenus Repository, Avoyelles Parish, Roll 508, Book 3, Ward 8, Page 86a, dated May 4, 1910 by Louis L. Gremillion, Enumerator, shows this couple with 7 children at home. Also living with them was 18 year old Otride Bordelon. Living next door was Belizaire & Angel Charrier, and on the other side was Hypolite & Helen Guillot.
Melina Nugent was my great-grandmother. She was born 29 Sep 1905 in Bayou Jack, Louisiana. She married Horace Joseph Beauvais on 24 Nov 1925; their daughter, Dorothy Marie, was born 7 July 1932. The young family moved to Maringouin, Louisiana in Iberville Parish around 1944 and opened a country store there. Dorothy married Riley Prestenback 25 June 1950.
Horace died on 24 April 1989; Melina on 22 Jan 1999. Their daughter, Dorothy, died 7 Sep 1998. All three are buried at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Cemetery in Maringouin, Louisiana.
Dorothy and Riley had two children: Robert Keith Prestenback and Pamela Ann Prestenback, my mother.
